Aerial combat in the First World War

Guided tour 60–90 minutes Hangar 3

From aircraft to letters from the front – how technology and aerial combat shaped the experience of war

What to expect

The First World War is regarded as the ‘seminal catastrophe of the 20th century’. This interactive tour traces the course of this devastating war – from aeroplanes to letters from the front.

Target groups

Bundeswehr, secondary school classes, general public

Participants

Max. 15

Duration

60–90 minutes

Location

Hangar 3

Focus on aerial combat

The focus is on aerial combat, the newest form of military violence. Through a selection of artefacts, the tour explores technical developments and their impact on people.

Experiences of soldiers and the civilian population

How did soldiers and civilians experience the use of military airships and aircraft? What did war from the air bring that was new? And how did it change perceptions of technology and violence?

This is illustrated particularly vividly by the example of the soldier and pilot Peter Falkenstein from Euskirchen. His personal correspondence, along with vividly recreated rooms and objects, bring to life his experience of the First World War.
