Conservation

Workshop for historic military aircraft and equipment

What conservation involves

The primary aim of conservation work at the Military History Museum at Berlin-Gatow Airfield is to preserve historical and cultural heritage. Artefacts are therefore restored, conserved and prepared for display in accordance with scientific and ethical principles.

The wide range of materials involved – from metal and wood to plastics – makes each project demanding and often complex. The fact that exhibits displayed outdoors are exposed to the elements makes their preservation especially challenging.

Our experts also support other museums in meeting museological and legal requirements, such as the demilitarization of weapon systems.

Specialists renowned throughout Germany

The conservation team at the Military History Museum at Berlin-Gatow Airfield is based in Hangar 1. It is regarded as the largest specialist workshop in Germany for the conservation and restoration of aircraft.
