Aircraft, weapon systems and technical artefacts from the divided world of the Cold War

Large equipment from East and West

Step onto our extensive outdoor grounds and discover one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of Cold War-era military aviation equipment. This unique exhibition brings together aircraft, radar and air defence systems from both East and West – a striking testament to decades of a divided world.

Alongside nuclear-capable aircraft, which served primarily as a projection of global power and as a deterrent, the outdoor display also features impressive transport aircraft and training aircraft used to school new pilots. High-speed combat aircraft are also represented – fighter-bombers, ground-attack aircraft and fighter planes. Reconnaissance aircraft and electronic warfare aircraft – the ‘silent scouts’ of the Cold War – are on display, too. Also exhibited are anti-submarine warfare aircraft, target-towing aircraft, air defence systems and radar systems.

A special highlight

A particular highlight is the C-47 Dakota transport aircraft. It was presented to Berlin as a gift by the Australian government and stands as a moving testament to international solidarity during the dramatic months of the Berlin Airlift.
